Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Intent

At Thornhill Primary school, we teach modern foreign languages in order to provide an opening to other cultures, fostering pupils’ curiosity and deepening their understanding of the world.

In Key stage 2, pupils learn French. The teaching provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language with the focus being on practical communication. We aim to enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing.  During lessons, children follow the Language Angels programme of study where they are taught to understand and respond to spoken and written language, speak with increasing confidence, write at varying length using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt and discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of MFL at Thornhill Primary School is supported by Language Angles, which sets out learning opportunities for each

Year group in Key Stage 2.  Each year group covers an element of phonetical learning to support the French pronunciation and is followed by three themes per year which build upon previous learning and cross curricular links to ensure deepening on the French language. This allows for progression and retention of key skills and knowledge, and the introduction of some concepts which will support their progression into Key Stage 3. MFL teaching is spread over the year to ensure learning is built upon and given time to reflect on previous learning.
