Home Learning
At Thornhill Primary School, we believe that regular home learning plays an important role in helping children develop confidence, independence and a love of learning. We encourage all children, regardless of year group, to spend time each week completing the following activities at home:
📚 Reading
Children are expected to read regularly at home and discuss what they have read with an adult where possible. Reading every day, even for a short period, helps to develop fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and a lifelong enjoyment of books. Please remember to record reading in your child's reading record when applicable.
✏️ Spelling Practice
Spelling is a key part of developing strong writing skills. Children should practise their weekly spellings and revisit previously taught words to help secure them in their long-term memory.
🔢 Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS)
Regular practice on Times Tables Rock Stars helps children build confidence and accuracy with multiplication and division facts. Frequent short sessions are often more effective than occasional longer ones and can make a significant difference to mathematical fluency.
Year Group Spelling Lists
Listed below are each year group's spelling lists. These include the Common Exception Words and Statutory Spelling Words that children are expected to know by the end of their year group.
These words form an important part of the National Curriculum and children should continue to practise them throughout the year to support both their reading and writing development.
